Case Study 1
Max is a seventy-four
year old retired man recently hospitalized for acute respiratory distress.
His brother from Arkansas has come to live with him while he recuperates.
He was diagnosed with pneumonia and a new onset of atrial fibrillation.
He also has a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, gout,
arthritis and chronic peripheral edema. He is on several new medications
and becomes very short of breath after walking a few feet.
The physician orders the RN to assess cardiovascular status, pulmonary
status, assessment for signs and symptoms of infection, to instruct
in new medications and to draw a protime next week. In addition the
physician orders an evaluation by physical therapy for mobility and
strengthening.

Case Study 2
Esther is an eight-five-year-old
patient who has newly diagnosed diabetes and a slow healing wound on
her left ankle. She has impaired vision, is very weak and has just started
ambulating with a walker. She has no family or caregivers in the area
and she states she doesn't have enough money to hire a caregiver. She
was very confused in the hospital but insists she can manage at home.

Case Study 3
Bob is a fifty-six
year old patient who had a below the knee left leg amputation. Two years
ago he had the right leg amputated below the knee and wears prosthesis
on that side. He lives alone in a mobile home with 3 steps in the entry.
He has been unemployed for several years and recently became eligible
for Medicaid. He has been very vague about whether or not he has anyone
to help him at home.
The physician has ordered physical therapy and occupational therapy
to assist the patient with ambulation, strengthening and transfers.
