Nurse Competencies


Based on the 1997 Colorado Alliance For Nursing the following competencies apply to the novice home health nurse. To access standardsof practice check list click here.

As a patient care Manager, the nurse, works to achieve desired outcomes through coordination of individual/family care with effective use of time, personnel, equipment, supplies and work systems.
1. Uses management concepts within the health care system. Demonstrates leadership skills in achieving management goals
2.
Participates in the implementation, evaluation and refinement of nursing care delivery systems and standards of care. Promotes a caring environment in the workplace.
As a patient care Provider the nurse, using the nursing process, provides individual/family education using a wide range of teaching activate to promote health.
1. Uses interdisciplinary resources to collect data, identify educational needs to formulate nursing diagnoses for individual and family
2. Uses interdisciplinary resources to formulate and implement teaching plans and instructional material incorporating the healing arts as appropriate for individual/family.
3. Uses interdisciplinary resources in the evaluation of individual/family learning through the use of established criteria and modifies plans.

As an Advocate of patient care the nurse promotes a climate in which individuals/families may act in their own interest and intervenes when they are unable to act in their own interest.
1. Assesses, promotes and confirms understanding of individual/family knowledge about consumer rights and responsibilities, and serves as a mentor to other health care providers.
2. Promotes and participates in system changes related to individual/family well-being. Modifies practice accordingly.
3. Speaks on individual's/family's behalf when they are unable to do so, applying knowledge of variations in value systems.

As a Professional the nurse is accountable for the ethical, legal and professional responsibilities related to all nursing functions.
1. Role models a positive image of nursing regarding the values/professional/ethical/legal framework of nursing.
2. Promotes, maintains and enhances collaborative/caring relationships in the work environment.
3. Contributes to the self development of others and the portfolio/peer review process
4.
Analyzes the impact of practice trends and demonstrate knowledge of research and its relevance to nursing practice.
As a Teacher, the nurse uses the nursing process and theory to provide individual/family education using a wide range of teaching activities to promote health.
1. Uses interdisciplinary resources to collect data, identify educational needs to formulate nursing diagnosis for individual/family.
2. Uses interdisciplinary resources to formulate and implement teaching plans and instructional materials for individual/family (i.e. teaching forms, referrals, food/drug pamphlets, etc.).
3. Collaborates with interdisciplinary resources in evaluating individual /family learning and modifies plans.
