Introduction to Planning a Visit

In addition to information about using the course and Web CT you were provided background information on social, political and economic issues that have influenced and changed the home health industry through the years. Some of these changes were provided by nurse leaders such as Lillian Wald, Mary Brewster, Florence Nightingale and Mary Breckenridge who established the foundation and in many cases set the standard for home health nursing. You also learned the importance of social factors and political legislation such as Medicare/Medicaid, PPS, DRGs and OASIS that have established the standards of the home health work environment. These are all critical issues for which you must remain informed in order to comply and work within the home care industry.

In this next module "Getting Ready for the Home Visit" you will learn more on rules and regulations, information on patient's rights, Medicare, Medicaid, insurance and financial issues that are critical to reimbursement of home care. There is also information on your roles and responsibilities as a care manager. This is all information that you should be knowledgeable about and be able to apply in the next module "Making the Home Visit".
