Responsibilities of a "Generalist"

The professional home health nurse practices at the generalist level in the client's home, site of residence, or appropriate community site. The focus of the nurse's practice includes the client, family, and caregivers. Responsibilities of the generalist include the following.

  • Assessing client and caregiver needs.
  • Providing client and caregiver education.
  • Performing nursing activities within the plan of care.
  • Providing and monitoring direct and indirect care.
  • Collaborating with other disciplines, practitioners, and payers.
  • Supervising ancillary personnel and informal caregivers.
